While Sang was having tea and chatting with her parents, Mang walked seriously around the house, his fi ngertips touched the surface of a board to see how the dust was layered. He behaved like a private detective seeking for proof of something, or a police dog searching for a certain smell, or simply like a good thief disguising himself as an actor, making some remarks and pretending to be normal. Eventually Mang’s nose led him to the kitchen where Mei was busy preparing the dinner. Mang claimed he liked cooking, so he insisted on staying to be Mei’s helper. The children were happy, gathered together before the screen with an expectant mixed sound fi lling the house.
